GENRE SELECTION

So, you have the skills necessary. What sort of book are you going to write?? There are different sets of guidelines to be followed depending on the type of book you decide to write.

There is a world of difference between writing a children’s book and writing for adults. A children’s book must be aimed at just the right age group, too high or too low and you’re in trouble. The vocabulary used, the theme, the overall length are very important. An adult will persevere with a book when first opening it and finding it difficult or different to what he is familiar with. Not so with a children’s book. You have to get their attention immediately and keep it otherwise they will put it aside and lose interest.

If you decide short stories are for you, then as a rule the book should have only one storyline, cover a short time period and the plot should be simple and contain three or four characters. Compare that to novels of epic proportions such as Lord of the Rings. This masterpiece contains generations of characters, takes place over centuries and contains more storylines than Eastenders!!

Writing non-fiction requires accurate knowledge of the subject in question which may require further research as the book progresses. It is also important before embarking on this type of book that you have enough information to make it viable.
